El Greco painted his adopted city under a sky that shouldn't be possible. Black storm clouds tower over Toledo; a strange greenish glow lights up the cathedral and the Alcázar. There is no visible sun, no moon, no consistent light source anywhere. Green shadows sit where they can't sit. It is not a landscape in the topographical sense — El Greco rearranged the buildings, moved the cathedral, condensed the geography.
