The Burial of the Count of Orgaz

El Greco painted a burial-plus-vision on the wall of a Toledo church. In the lower half, mourners in black gather; two saints (Augustine and Stephen) miraculously descend to lay the pious Count of Orgaz in his grave. In the upper half, his soul rises through clouds toward Christ. At the far left, one boy looks straight out at the viewer — El Greco's eight-year-old son Jorge Manuel. A handkerchief in his pocket bears the painter's signature and the date. The child is 8 years old in the painting. He was 8 when it was painted. Now at Iglesia de Santo Tomé, Toledo @santotometoledo
