The story
A young couple sits in the lower right, the only figures in the painting who haven't noticed what is happening. He plays a lute, she sings from sheet music. Directly behind them, leaning in, a skeleton bows a viol along with their song. It is the calmest moment in the painting. The lovers will not look up in time.
