The story
In 1656 Rembrandt declared insolvency. The court inventory of his possessions, published the next year, lists his entire studio, his armour collection, his Dürer and Raphael prints, even his sheets, all auctioned. Across forty years of self-portraits Rembrandt wears the same soft Dutch beret. He sold almost everything he owned; he held on to the hat. Now at National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. @ngadc
