The story
The knife on the floor is the actual weapon. Charlotte Corday bought a folding kitchen knife with a horn handle for two francs at a cutler's shop in the arcades of the Palais Royal in Paris on the morning of 13 July 1793. She walked to Marat's apartment, asked an audience on the pretext of denouncing enemies of the Republic, and stabbed him through the right lung as he sat in his bath. The shop's records survive.
