The story
Christ's right hand and Judas's right hand are reaching toward the same loaf on the table, an inch apart. Leonardo is illustrating Matthew 26:23 literally: "He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me." Earlier Last Suppers showed the institution of the Eucharist, a calm sacramental moment. Leonardo showed the second of betrayal-announcement. Judas leans away. His hand has not stopped.
