Signs of the Zodiac: Aries

Diego Quispe Tito was an Indigenous Andean painter of the Cusco School. In 1681 he painted a series of the twelve signs of the zodiac inside Cusco Cathedral, replacing the Mediterranean animals with local Andean equivalents where possible. He signed his name and marked it with 'Yndio' (Indigenous) — a rare visible signature of Indigenous authorship in colonial religious art. Still in Cusco Cathedral.
