Ophelia

The story

The model was Elizabeth Siddal, who lay in a bath of water for over four months while Millais painted her; she developed pneumonia. Every flower around her body is a deliberate Shakespearean or Victorian symbol: poppy for death, daisy for innocence, pansy for love in vain, violet for faithfulness, rose for youth. The flowers are arranged from her cheek to her hand to her hip — a funeral in petals. Now at Tate Britain, London @tate
