The story
Van Gogh painted the Café du Forum in Arles in September 1888 — twelve seated and standing figures under the yellow gas-lit awning, a central long-haired figure at the table, and one man walking out toward the back-right doorway. Scholars have read the composition as a Last Supper transposed into a working- class French street: Christ in white, twelve around him, Judas leaving.
