The Haywain Triptych

The painting illustrates a Flemish proverb: "The world is a haystack, and each man pulls from it what he can." A giant haywain rolls across the middle panel; people of every rank, popes, emperors, peasants, scramble up its sides. The wagon is pulled by a team of demons, including one with a fish's tail, one with stag's antlers, one with a tree-trunk leg. They walk calmly. The destination is Hell.
